Overview Location
One of Nepal’s most isolated and culturally diverse hiking routes is the Upper Dolpo Trek, which takes hikers into a hidden region where Tibetan Buddhism and age-old Bon customs flourish amid breathtaking high-altitude scenery. Upper Dolpo, which is in Nepal’s far northwest, is still a restricted area that needs a special permit and assistance from guides. This walk passes through ancient stone villages, centuries-old monasteries, deep valleys, high passes (over 5,000m), rocky routes, and the breathtaking, turquoise Phoksundo Lake. Peter Matthiessen’s novel The Snow Leopard and the film Himalaya (Caravan) made the mysterious Upper Dolpo famous. Remoteness, difficult passes, and a lack of amenities make the route physically taxing, but those who brave it are rewarded with unadulterated beauty, enduring culture, and genuine adventure. In order to escape the intense monsoon and deep winter snows, the optimum times of year to trek are late spring (May–June) and early fall (September–October).
Highlights
- See the breathtaking Phoksundo Lake, the bluest and deepest lake in Nepal.
- Pass over high mountain passes such as Shey La (5,010m) and Kang La (5,360m).
