Makalu Base Camp Trek

Overview Location

Makalu Base Camp Trek is a genuine off-the-beaten-track adventure to one of Nepal’s remotest and least-touched Himalayan regions. Located in eastern Nepal, the trek will take you to the foot of Mt. Makalu (8,485m), the globe’s fifth-highest peak. The trail passes through rich tropical forests, charming Sherpa villages, high alpine meadows, and harsh glacier basins, presenting dramatic contrasts of landscapes and ecosystems. Trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking vistas of not only Makalu but also Everest, Lhotse, Chamlang, and Baruntse. This trek is challenging due to its inaccessibility, frequent changes in elevation, and lack of facilities, but it rewards you with unparalleled solitude, unspoiled wilderness, and the thrill of true discovery. The Makalu-Barun National Park, along which the trekking trail goes, is a biodiversity hot spot with rare flora and fauna. The best seasons for trekking are spring (April–May) and autumn (October–November), when the weather is best.

Trekking Permit Requirements

Two permits are required:

  • Makalu-Barun National Park Permit
    • Price: NPR 3,000 (~USD 25)
  • Makalu Rural Municipality Entry Permit
    • NPR 2,000 (~USD 15)

Accommodation and Food

  • Teahouses/Lodges: Basic teahouses and lodges to Yangri Kharka; plain camping-style lodges near Base Camp.
  • Food: Nepali local meals (Dal Bhat), Tibetan bread, noodles, and soups; fewer menu choices at higher altitudes.

Important Tips

  • Altitude Preparation:
➔ Extremely high fitness level needed owing to long and steep ascents and descents.
➔ Slow down — altitude sickness is a serious risk at 3,500 meters and above.
  • Packing List Must-Haves:
    • 4-season sleeping bag (rated at -15°C or lower)
    • Thick insulated layers and trekking boots
    • Supporting trekking poles for steep sections
    • Solar charger or power bank
  • Connectivity: Essentially no mobile network at higher camps.
  • Travel Insurance: Make sure that it covers high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation.

Alternative Routes

  • Makalu to Everest via Sherpani Col Trek: A serious alpine ascent between Makalu Base Camp and the Everest region through high passes (Sherpani Col, West Col)—extremely difficult and technical.
  • Shortened Makalu Trek: To Yangri Kharka and back for those who would like to try it but do not want to go as far as Base Camp.

Why People Love the Makalu Base Camp Trek?

  • Breathtaking mountain views without the crowds of Everest or Annapurna.
  • Rugged adventure atmosphere with true wilderness trekking.
  • Diverse landscape — tropical rainforests to snowy peaks in a matter of days’ trek.

Fun Fact

  • The Barun Valley, on the trek to Makalu Base Camp, is one of the few places on Earth where tropical forests and alpine habitats exist this close together, giving unparalleled ecological diversity.
